The Story Behind the Metrics

The FORTLAGE Collective’s social impact is not held in one place.

It lives in speaking engagements, advisory conversations, mentoring relationships, public writing, digital publications, community panels, podcasts, and the quiet moments when someone sees a possible future for themselves because the work made that future feel visible.

Since 2017, Cynthia Fortlage’s work has evolved from CAF Services into The FORTLAGE Collective: a purpose-led practice built around inclusive leadership, dignity, belonging, and Acceptance without Understanding™.

The aim is simple: to help leaders and organisations create spaces where people are treated with respect before they are expected to explain themselves.

How the Model Works

Paid work sustains the mission.

Client engagements, speaking, advisory work, and leadership development create the foundation that allows The FORTLAGE Collective to continue offering public education, pro bono mentoring, community contribution, and visibility work.

That balance matters.

Not every organisation or individual who needs this work has access to large budgets. Public writing, podcasts, panels, digital resources, and pro bono mentoring help extend the work beyond those who can pay for it.

This is the social value model: commercial work creates sustainability; sustainability creates capacity; capacity allows the mission to keep reaching further.

Public Education, Mentoring, and Visibility

A significant part of The FORTLAGE Collective’s impact comes through public education.

The written archive, newsletters, digital publications, and long-form thought leadership make insight available beyond the workshop room or client engagement. They create access to language, reflection, and practical thinking about leadership, gender, dignity, belonging, and human rights.

Mentoring creates a different kind of value.

Where public speaking can reach many people at once, mentoring supports fewer people more deeply. Cynthia has provided year-long pro bono mentoring to more than 43 people, primarily women and LGBTQ+ professionals, supporting career growth, confidence, business development, identity, leadership, and belonging.

Visibility also creates impact.

On several occasions, people have directly credited Cynthia’s visibility and work with helping them come out, imagine possibility, or see a future they had not previously thought was available to them. That impact is difficult to measure in traditional terms, but it is deeply real.

Some impact is counted. Some impact is felt. Both matter.

How Values Are Estimated

Social value estimates are calculated using conservative replacement-value assumptions.

Pro bono mentoring value is based on more than 43 year-long mentoring relationships, an average of 18 hours per mentee, and a standard advisory rate of £300 per hour.

Written public education value is based on 596 published posts at a conservative replacement value of £250 per post.

Annual pro bono public education and visibility value is based on an estimated 18 unpaid public appearances per year at a blended contribution value of £1,500 per appearance.

These figures do not capture the full human value of the work. They simply help make visible some of the professional value contributed without charge.

The Promise

The FORTLAGE Collective is not building impact for scale alone. It is building sustainability so the work can keep reaching people, shaping leaders, and helping create workplaces where no one has to feel they do not belong.

The promise is bold: to teach one billion people about Acceptance without Understanding™ by 2050.

The path is human: one leader, one behaviour, one decision, one workplace, and one moment of possibility at a time.
